Pump System Optimization for Commercial Buildings Course

November 10, 2022

Overview

Most commercial buildings include pumps as part of heating, cooling, chiller, water pressure boosting, fire safety systems, and wastewater systems. These pump based systems consume more than 35% of a commercial building’s energy.  Poor application of a building’s pumps, flow control and motors can lead to inefficiency and wasted energy. Optimizing pumping application and operations has become increasingly fundamental. This course is intended to assist those in the industry have a better understanding on the general layout, components and operation of a typical commercial building, and provide the guidance necessary to select pump types and define pump materials to perform effectively, efficiently and reliably in the various building system operations. In addition to pump selection criteria, it also addresses ancillary components that are required to operate a pump, which are the driver, couplings, and control methods. This single resource yields the practical information for those that are new to defining commercial building pumping systems and equipment, and for those that are experienced but desire to enhance their knowledge-base for these systems.

Course Objectives

  • Cite the benefits of pump system optimization
  • Identify the types of pumping systems and their major components in commercial buildings
  • Access applicable industry standards and energy codes
  • Explain the importance of proper use of pump curves, system curves, and control valves
  • Follow the steps in a pump system assessment
  • Explain why the economics of pump selection using Life Cycle Cost and ROI analysis is important
  • Describe the steps in creation of an Action Plan for a pump system optimization program
