This webinar is a continuation of the Hydraulic Institute‚Äôs waterhammer webinar series. This webinar encompasses three parts, the first being a review of the physics behind surge including the causes and key equations for quantifying. The second portion will guide those in attendance on when and how to evaluate a system for surge using examples from computer surge modeling. After having a general understanding of the first two portions of the webinar, an attendee will be able to better understand surge mitigation solutions and which options are more or less suitable for a particular type of surge. In all, an overview of the following topics will be reviewed: Joukowsky Equation, wave speed, communication time, high frequency monitoring, computer modeling including a brief discussion on the differences between Method of Characteristics (MOC) and Wave Characteristics Method (WCM), low vs high pressure transients, system design changes and suppression equipment. 

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common equations in surge physics
  • Understand the "when and how" of evaluation of surge within a system
  • Identify options for mitigating surge, including system design changes and surge suppression equipment


Amy Marroquin

Senior Hydraulic Engineer


Amy is a Sr. Hydraulic Engineer for Blacoh Industries, a certified Women's Business Enterprise, and leading manufacturer of pulsation dampeners, surge suppression and other industrial fluid control products. In this role, Amy provides training and guidance in the fields of waterhammer and computer surge analysis. She is a Texas A&M engineering graduate with almost 20 years of engineering and management experience. Designs have encompassed numerous piping systems, pressure vessels and packaged equipment for a broad range of fluid medias including water, chemical, hydrocarbons, natural gas and sour gas. Amy has held leadership roles in several fast faced, critical projects installed worldwide. 

Christopher Michalos

Brown and Caldwell

Chris Michalos is the National Practice Leader for Pumping and Advanced Hydraulics at Brown and Caldwell and has more than 25 years of experience in the hydraulic analysis and design of closed conduit systems, pumps stations, and hydraulics structures.  He received a BS in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Purdue University, and MS and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State specializing in Hydraulics.
