Waterhammer Evaluation and Surge Suppression Methods

    PDH Credits: 1

    Overview

This webinar is a continuation of the Hydraulic Institute’s waterhammer webinar series. This webinar encompasses three parts, the first being a review of the physics behind surge including the causes and key equations for quantifying. The second portion will guide those in attendance on when and how to evaluate a system for surge using examples from computer surge modeling. After having a general understanding of the first two portions of the webinar, an attendee will be able to better understand surge mitigation solutions and which options are more or less suitable for a particular type of surge. In all, an overview of the following topics will be reviewed: Joukowsky Equation, wave speed, communication time, high frequency monitoring, computer modeling including a brief discussion on the differences between Method of Characteristics (MOC) and Wave Characteristics Method (WCM), low vs high pressure transients, system design changes and suppression equipment.

    Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

    • Identify common equations in surge physics
    • Understand the "when and how" of evaluation of surge within a system
    • Identify options for mitigating surge, including system design changes and surge suppression equipment

The acceptance of continuing education as it applies to fulfillment of the state licensing requirements for professional designations is at the pleasure of the individual state licensing boards. It is the responsibility of the individual participants to be knowledgeable about their state requirements.

    Licensed Professional Engineers

Continuing professional development is a vital component to the engineering licensure process. Most state licensing boards require continuing professional development as a condition for licensure and renewal of the license to practice engineering. Pre-approval of training providers and courses are not required by most state licensing boards, except for the following:

    Florida Board of Professional Engineers

Pump Systems Matter is a board-approved continuing education provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers: License # CEA361.

North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors

Pump Systems Matter is an approved continuing professional competency sponsor for the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors: Sponsor # S-0523.

New York State Board for Engineering, Land Surveying, and Geology

Pump Systems Matter is approved as a sponsor of continuing education for professional engineers in New York State: NYS Sponsor # 241.

Fundamentals of Waterhammer and Surge Suppression

    PDH Credits: 1

    Overview

Waterhammer is a pressure surge in a piping system due to a sudden change in flow. It can occur when the power to driver is lost, air is expelled from a system, a valve closes too quickly, or a check valve slams shut. This webinar will review what can happen as a result of the waterhammer, some basic physics, and ways to account for it in your pumping system design.

    Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

    • Define waterhammer terminology
    • Identify accidents caused by waterhammer
    • Describe the four stages of waterhammer
    • Understand the Joukowsky equation
    • Understand the communication time concept
    • Identify different types of waterhammer
    • Solve fundamental equations
    • Understand general principal of operation of a pulsation dampener
    • Identify the types of dampeners and their pros/cons
    • Describe configurations and their pros/cons
    • Identify technical questions answered by waterhammer analysis
    • Describe the effects of water hammer on pumps and valves
    • Explain transient cavitation
    • Describe the different methods surge can be suppressed
