Introduction to Variable Frequency Drives

1-Part Live Webinar

Overview

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are a common tool for improving process and quality control and for realizing energy savings in pumping systems. This webinar outlines the general concepts for using a VFD in pumping applications and covers their fundamental principles of operation. Registrants will be presented with application considerations that are typically outside the boundaries of the VFD (such as the environment and the electrical system), but that have a significant influence on its selection and operation. Also covered are safety and troubleshooting of variable frequency drives and their proper maintenance.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners should be able to:

  1. Understand the benefits of variable frequency drives and the types of pumping applications that are most suitable for their use.
  2. Be familiar with the basic architecture of VFD systems, including AC induction motors.
  3. Understand the basic considerations that apply to selecting and applying a VFD in a pumping system
  4. Understand how the environment (temperature, altitude, cooling, etc.) affects the selection and operation of a VFD
  5. Understand how the electrical system (grounding, power quality, input/output cables, etc.) affects the selection and operation of the VFD
  6. Be able to troubleshoot the drive and electrical components and understand the likely causes of performance issues
  7. Be able to troubleshoot the motor and mechanical components and understand the likely causes of performance issues
  8. Understand the key elements of VFD maintenance.

The acceptance of continuing education as it applies to fulfillment of the state licensing requirements for professional designations is at the pleasure of the individual state licensing boards. It is the responsibility of the individual participants to be knowledgeable about their state requirements.

Licensed Professional Engineers

Continuing professional development is a vital component to the engineering licensure process. Most state licensing boards require continuing professional development as a condition for licensure and renewal of the license to practice engineering. Pre-approval of training providers and courses are not required by most state licensing boards, except for the following:

Florida Board of Professional Engineers

Pump Systems Matter is a board-approved continuing education provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers: License # CEA361.

North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors

Pump Systems Matter is an approved continuing professional competency sponsor for the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors: Sponsor # S-0523.

New York State Board for Engineering, Land Surveying, and Geology

Pump Systems Matter is approved as a sponsor of continuing education for professional engineers in New York State: NYS Sponsor # 241.
