Shaft Analysis and Bearing Life Calculations in Rotodynamic Pumps

Overview: 

This presentation aims to equip engineers with a comprehensive understanding of shaft stress, shaft stretch, and bearing life calculations in rotodynamic pumps. Attendees will gain fundamental knowledge, including key definitions, equations, and calculation procedures related to shaft behavior and bearing life. The presentation covers the effects of shaft stress and stretch, methods to minimize these forces, and practical insights into calculating L10 bearing life, including adjustments for reliability, material improvements, and lubrication conditions. Additionally, the session will address the significance of pump design, common bearing types, lubrication methods, preload and clearance, dynamic and static load ratings, and calculation factors.

Learning Level - Intermediate  

Intermediate level training is designed for individuals who have some experience and basic knowledge on the topic. It builds upon basic concepts and expands the breadth and depth of understanding supporting the development of skills. The basic level training within bundle modules 1, 2 and 3 prepare them for intermediate level training provided in bundle module 4.

Individuals looking gain in depth technical knowledge or those looking for a refresher on applied fundamentals, including experienced maintenance and operation personnel, pump system designers and owners, technical sales, and engineers.

Learning Objectives:

• Gain a comprehensive understanding of shaft stress and shaft stretch in rotodynamic pumps, and how to analyze it to improve pump design, operation, reliability, and prevent potential failures.

• Describe the different types of stress (shear and torsion) experienced by shafts, the causes and effects, the calculation procedure for determining stress levels, and propose appropriate methods to minimize both shear and torsional stress.

• Acquire knowledge of shaft stretch in vertically suspended pumps, the causes and effects, the calculation procedure, and recommend methods to compensate.

• Acquire knowledge of calculation procedures used in determining basic L10 bearing life and the adjusted L10 life to account for elasto-hydrodynamic theory of lubrication. 

• Learn how to adjust the basic L10 rating life to accommodate different reliability requirements and understand the influence of lubrication film thickness on bearing life, utilizing equations and factors for accuracy.

Prior to joining the Hydraulic Institute, he held new product development and engineering management positions with a major pump manufacturer, with a focus on new pump design, system analysis, and testing. Mr. Moser obtained his B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alabama.

Webinar Instructions

  1. To join the live webinar session, participants must login to their account and click the "Contents" tab, then select "View Live Webinar Session". After the webinar session concludes, return to the Contents tab. Note that a recording of the webinar will be available shortly after the live session.
  2. Participants must pass a quiz in order to claim PDH credits and a certificate. Click "Complete Quiz for Live Webinar" to begin the quiz. Participants will have 10 attempts and must achieve at least 80% correct to pass. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab.
