Overview: 

This webinar aims to address a critical issue: excessive nozzle loads applied to pumps, which have the potential to undermine the safety and reliability of pump operations. It reflects the ANSI/HI 9.6.2-2021 standard, titled 'Rotodynamic Pumps for Assessment of Applied Nozzle Loads.' The presentation will cover various factors contributing to nozzle loads, explore their impacts on pumps, and provide users with guidance on determining acceptable nozzle load levels. It will delve into the sources of casing nozzle loads, including piping dimensional changes, thermal growth, installation misalignment, and more. The presentation emphasizes the importance of accurate calculations, whether performed manually or through finite element analysis (FEA). Furthermore, it highlights the necessity of addressing mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal load sources along with example assessment calculations. Ultimately, this presentation aims to benefit pump OEMs, engineers, consultants, and purchasers by offering an in-depth overview of the standard's content, scope, and potential applications.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the significance of nozzle loads on pump operation, recognizing their potential to compromise safety and reliability in pump systems.
  • Identify the diverse sources of casing nozzle loads, including factors such as thermal growth, pressurization strain, and installation misalignment.
  • Comprehend the effects of nozzle loads on pumps, encompassing nozzle stress, casing misalignment, and driver/pump misalignment leading to vibration and premature component failure.
  • Differentiate between manual calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) methods for determining allowable nozzle loads, while acknowledging the role of assumptions in both approaches.
  • Grasp the concept of hydraulic pressure reaction forces induced by axially flexible pipe couplings, such as rubber expansion joints, and the methods like thrust rods and tie-rods used to manage them.
  • Recognize the importance of evaluating mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal load sources in minimizing piping loads to prevent excessive stresses on pump systems.
  • Gain insight into the contents of the ANSI/HI 9.6.2-2021 standard, including nomenclature, material specifications, adjustment factors, maximum allowable nozzle loads, and example assessments of applied nozzle loads across various pump types.

Alex Moser is the Senior Engineer of Standards and Training at the Hydraulic Institute with technical responsibility for standards, guidebooks, training, and technical programs as well as assisting the governmental regulations committees with technical expertise. Prior to joining the Hydraulic Institute, he held new product development and engineering management positions with a major pump manufacturer, with a focus on new pump design, system analysis, and testing. Mr. Moser obtained his B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alabama.
