Understanding the Basics of Waterhammer and Surge Suppression

Overview:

Waterhammer is a pressure surge in a piping system due to a sudden change in flow. It can occur when the power to driver is lost, air is expelled from a system, a valve closes too quickly, or a check valve slam shut. This webinar will review what can happen as a result of the waterhammer, some basic physics, and ways to account for it in your pumping system design.

Learning Level – Intermediate:

Intermediate level training is designed for individuals who have some experience and basic knowledge on the topic. It builds upon basic concepts and expands the breadth and depth of understanding supporting the development of skills.

It is recommended that attendees have basic level knowledge or complete basic level training prior to attending this course.

Audience:

Individuals looking gain in depth technical knowledge or those looking for a refresher on applied fundamentals, including experienced maintenance and operation personnel, pump system designers and owners, technical sales, and engineers.

Nikos is a Pump Systems Assessment Professional working in the water industry. Having earned a PhD in Fluid Mechanics from Virginia Tech, he specializes in Infrastructure Hydraulics. His portfolio focuses on transient hydraulic analyses in support of planning, design and optimization of pumping systems. He is a member of the Hydraulic Institute’s Waterhammer Committee and the leader of Brown and Caldwell’s Transient Hydraulics Group.
