This webinar provides an overview of using surge tanks to mitigate water hammer in pumping systems. Participants will review the fundamentals of water hammer, learn how surge tanks function, explore different surge tank types and their applications, and understand key design, sizing, and integration considerations. The session will also cover maintenance, inspection, rerating practices, and real-world case studies featuring field and model data to illustrate effective surge control solutions.

- Understand water hammer and hydraulic transients and their impact on pumps, pipelines, and water systems.
- Identify and select the appropriate surge tank type based on system requirements, operating conditions, and design goals.
- Evaluate key surge tank sizing factors, including pressure limits, protection duration, gas volume, pre-charge pressure, and redundancy needs.
- Assess the effects of surge mitigation devices such as check valves, air valves, and control valves on system performance and surge protection.
- Apply lessons from real-world case studies demonstrating surge tank performance, model validation, power-loss scenarios, and one-way surge tank applications.

She is the national lead for Transient Modeling within Hazen. She has completed over 130 transient models covering wastewater, deep well injection, reuse, non-potable water, raw water, and complete water distribution systems. She demonstrates proficiency in a variety of widely-used surge modeling software

Dr. Ravisangar specializes in pump systems and hydraulics and has engineering experience covering a broad range of civil and environmental engineering aspects related to pumping systems and hydraulics. His experience related to pumping systems include: analysis and design, pumping system rehabilitation, development of control strategies, energy optimization, and testing. His hydraulic experience encompasses water and wastewater plant hydraulic analyses and hydraulic design, water distribution system modeling, dynamic and transient hydraulic analysis of piping networks, surge protection systems design, and sludge and slurry rheology and hydraulics of non-Newtonian fluids.
